Continuing with an Essay

For project three I am going to be using my essay from project one. I am choosing to use this essay over the second essay because advertisements interest me more than videogames. I also think that they would be easier to do extended research on. I found books in the library that I could use on advertising and if I were too look into the videogame that I choose then I don't think that I would find much on the actual game besides cheat codes and books telling you strategies for the game. Advertisements have been out for a long time, longer than videogames, which means that there is probably more information on the topic. Overall trying to decide which paper I wanted to work with was clear in my mind because I am interested in advertisements more than videogames and also because it would be easier to find information on advertisements than the videogame that I chose.

Jenkins's Lens

As you know, in my last blog I told you that I was going to be analyzing “Mario Kart” for my second project. I am choosing to use Jenkins as a lens to examine the video game because I can relate the video game to a lot of things that he mentioned in his paper. Jenkins did mention the original “Mario” game in his essay and even though “Mario Kart” is nothing like it, besides some of the similar characters, I can really relate the video game to what he said that Thorne said about “borderwork” and how they are coming out with games and books that can relate to both boys’ and girls’ interests. He was also mentioning how if boys and girls have something in common like a video game or a book that they both really like then it will bring them together to discuss, read, or even play the game, and how it might bring them together more in the outside world like in school or on the playground. Not only do I think, like Thorne, that it will bring girls and boys together, but it is a great game to also bring families together and play a game that they all can enjoy. Some things that I might want to mention in my paper with looking at my video game through Jenkins’s lens are:  “Mario Kart” is one of those games that were meant to bring boys and girls of all ages together. I would like to perhaps mention how Jenkins states how girls and boys have different tastes in how to play and different types of video games and books and then mention how he brings Thorne into his paper and how “Mario Kart” is a great example of a unisex game. A possible thesis or claim that I could use in my paper could be: “Mario Kart is a great game for boys and girls of all ages.” or “Mario Kart” is a great game that can not only bring girls and boys together but families as well.”

"Mario Kart"

For the second project I chose to pick the video game "Mario Kart". I personally do not play hardly any video games, just because simply I am terrible at them.  "Mario Kart" is a fun game for the whole family to play together. It attracts many people’s attention because all the bright colors and the interesting/fun characters that they have. Compared to the old "Mario Kart" the new one has many new courses to race and even characters. The new "Mario Kart" has baby versions of the characters, like there is a Baby Mario and a Baby Peach, etc. Based on the new characters, courses, and bright colors of the game, I think that "Mario Kart" is a very unisexed-based game. I really think that even on the just racing games there is more to it than just racing, and how you can pick up little boxes with question marks on them to help slow down the other players, it helps someone learn multitasking and hand-eye coordination with the new Nintendo Wii. I think that is it a great game for all ages, I know that my whole family plays it and we range from the ages of 7-55. The only thing that I don’t really like is how Mario games are only for Nintendo and with the new Wii system it’s hard to get used to driving the cart with having to move the whole controller, whereas before you just had to move the joystick. "Mario Kart" even has team races and battle games. "Mario Kart" could teach a younger person to work as a team to accomplish a victory; someone could say that it could be bad for them because it could make them very competitive and perhaps even a sore loser, when they lose a game. If kids start to play video games before they join sports, it could help improve their teamwork skills. As a person that doesn’t get into video games, I personally think this is a cute video game for people of all ages to play. Personally I don’t think that someone should sit in the house all the time and play video games, I think that they should play for only a certain amount of time and actually get out and do some outdoor activities. I do think that video games have advanced a ton though and the new Xbox kinect, Wii fit, and even the Playstation move, to help advance more activeness with video games.

Analyzing The Ads

It seems like all the perfume ads that I picked out are very sexual. Even when I typed in "perfume advertisements" in google, there was very few that weren't sexual. I think that I am going to argue about how people see that sexual attracting ads grab people's attention and that most perfume ads are sexually appealing. I mean why would they still do it so much if it didn't. Why do people wear perfume? So they can smell good for others and usually it's to attract the opposite sex. They try to make these ads very appealing in a sexual way. I'm not exactly sure about everything that I am going to write in my paper but I'm sure that I am going to mention that these most of the perfume ads I found are sexual in some way. I haven't started my paper just yet, so I might end up changing my mind about what topic to argue about most is, but I'm almost positive that the whole sexual topic is going to be in my paper somewhere.

Advertisements

I believe that the intended articles for these ads are particulary for woman and men wanting perfumes. The first two ads are for women perfume and the bottom one is an ad for Calvin Klein fragrances for men and woman. These ads seem to have the same sense of ways to grab the attention of people. All three of the ads seem to grab people's attention by the topic revolved around sex. The first two ads have two appealing woman that are naked or half naked which makes the perfume look seducing just like the woman look in these ads. Perhaps women would be attracted to the first two ads because maybe they would think that these woman look beautiful and attractive and maybe the perfume would make me smell beautiful and attracted. Even men could be attracted to the first two ads and want to buy it for their wife or girlfriend because they might be attracted to the naked woman in these ads and think maybe my girlfriend will feel better and want to be seduced by me with this perfume, like the women in the first two ads. The Calvin Klein ad could easily attract both men and woman because it's for both men and woman fragrances. This ad just like the other two is sexual with two attractive models looking like they are very attracted to each other and perhaps intimate. People may think if this Calvin Klein perfumes make the men and woman be more attracted to each other then it would make people want to buy it so they attract the opposite sex with their fragrances. These are not the only fragrance ads that I saw that were sexual, to me it seems like almost all fragrances try to have sexual ads. Perhaps they try to be sexual because they make the buyers think that with this certain scent they will attract the opposite sex more.

What I'd Like To Learn In English 102

In English 102 I would like to learn how to write a good paper and how to back up my topic.  I'm not sure if we will be learning APA format in this class, but I would like to learn how to do a paper in APA format because I know that in almost all nursing classes, you have to use APA format. I've never used or learned how to do APA format before and I am going to have to learn how to do it eventually because I am majoring in nursing. I know so far in this course I am seeing a difference in the teacher and the way she does things and I find it very interesting. I've never posted a blog before and this is my first one and so far it seems kinda fun! I am pretty excited to find out what this course will bring in the near future!
